Create a new you with a new attitude

How many times have you wished you could start your life fresh? Like a video game, just restart and try again! Well you can. And with only a new attitude you can create a new you (kind of like you 2.0). You can wipe the slate clean, start a fresh and transform yourself.

Learning how to use your attitude to be more constructive grants us this ability. It has a power that enables us to strip away the old you and start fresh. Laying the ground work for a new, and better you.

And you’ll be surprised how with such a minor change you can make an enormous difference to your life.

Creating a new you

It seems a bit cliché I know ‘create a new you’. Seems like something Oprah would say. But it’s where I started when I was at my lowest. I knew something had to change. I just didn’t know what.At that point in time I was extremely depressed and unhappy with the direction my life was taking. I’d suffered depression many times before, and I’d always fantasised about being a different person, because I wanted a better life. And everything I was wasn’t helping. So I started seeing a therapist, and after a few sessions my therapist said a few words that changed my life “Your way of thinking is killing you, you have to improve your attitude if you want to improve your life” .She challenged me to go home and reflect about how my way of thinking had damaged my life. After some serious reflection I concluded that my attitude was my worst enemy. No matter what the situation was these thoughts would always run through my head:

  • Where did I go wrong?
  • What could go wrong?
  • I’ve made so many mistakes in the past
  • My future looks dim

Notice the common theme? I had a negative filter about everything. I thought by analysing where I’d gone and how I could go wrong in the future that I could prevent bad things from happening, a habit many share with me. But in actuality I was doing the opposite, I was always finding new ways for things to go wrong, no matter how ridiculous they were. It became a habit, and habits are hard to break.

So I decided to challenge myself. I knew now that most of my unhappiness was stemming from my attitude. So I determined if I improved my attitude I could improve my life…and the rest is history.

My new attitude helped me:

  • Beat depression
  • Get a better job
  • Became more joyful
  • Improve my outlook, and
  • Rid myself of toxic thinking

Now I’m happier than I’ve ever been. And it all started with a better attitude.

Out with the old, In with the new

Like when I challenged myself I’m going to challenge you. If you’ve determined that your attitude isn’t helping, even if it’s just a minor thing, you can make a small change fordo instantly to make a change.

So how do you do this? How do you start creating, or at least reinventing yourself? Well the first thing to do is to identify your unhelpful thoughts.

Start by writing your toxic thoughts down on a piece of paper. Doing this makes them real. For example:

  • I’m not good enough
  • I’m not smart enough
  • I’m unattractive
  • I have no future
  • I’ll never be happy

These will be different for everyone. Take a moment now to think about what these are for you? Being aware of what your triggers are, is half the battle. Once you’ve identified them, the next step is replacing them! Out with the old, in with the new. Don’t worry if you haven’t identified them all yet. Whenever you do write it down and treat it the same way.

Change your attitude, change your life

Now to apply it!

Creating a better version of yourself won’t take any major effort. All you’ll need is a change of attitude. Because your attitude affects everything. It can make all the difference to whether you lead a great life, or a mediocre one.
I’m going to keep this really simple so you have only one rule to follow…think positive!! That’s it. In almost every scenario a positive attitude will help you more than a negative. So get started, because a little effort can change your life a lot.

For example:

  • Change: I hate my job, to I’m lucky I’ve got a job, and if I keep searching I’ll find an even better one.
  • Change: I’m not smart enough, to I am smart and I’ll keep adding to my knowledge to be even smarter. What new skills do I want to learn?
  • Change: I have no future, to the world is full of opportunity

Why is this so important? A negative attitude defeats you, while a positive attitude motivates you. By promoting a positive attitude to dominate your life you’ll see a rise in all of the qualities that contribute to your wellbeing (confidence, motivation, willpower, persistence, etc.)

Take note, I’m asking you to employ a more positive attitude. That’s it. I’m not asking you to work out how you’ll achieve your objectives, i.e. get a better job, etc. I don’t want you to over analyse.

If you persist with a positive attitude you’ll find your wellbeing qualities (Confidence, persistence, etc) will grow to meet your needs.

Try before rejecting

If you’re thinking that there’s no way this will work at least try before you reject them, remember, you’ve got nothing to lose by trying. I’m a little ashamed to say when I first heard that employing a new attitude could change my life, I rejected it without actually trying. But I wish I had, because I now know what I missed out on.

So give it a try, just for a few months. And have a little faith, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
